Square Logs

Importing Square Wood Logs significantly improves container loading efficiency (more volume per container) and reduces freight costs. Additionally, the sapwood and bark are removed, meaning you are paying only for the usable heartwood, reducing waste at your sawmill.

It depends on the diameter of the log and customer request. Large diameter logs can be cut Free of Heart (FOH) to minimize checking. However, most standard square logs are Boxed Heart, meaning the pith is centered. We use S-irons or gang-nails to secure the ends and minimize splitting.

Volume is calculated based on the geometric volume (Length × Width × Height). Unlike round logs, there is no complex formula. We typically measure the cross-section and length, applying a small allowance for wane if agreed upon in the contract.

End-checking is a major concern for hardwoods. We apply high-quality paraffin wax or end-seal paint to both ends of every square log immediately after cutting. For high-tension species, we also apply gang-nails (anti-split plates) to physically restrain the wood fibers from splitting.

Our standard square logs aim for sharp edges, but a small amount of wane (rounded edges with bark/sapwood) may be permitted depending on the grade, typically less than 10% of the surface. For “Clean Cut” orders, we ensure the squares are 100% free of wane and sapwood.
